Earth 2140 Work-in-progress report
Real Time Strategy heading your way - very soon 2000-10-02 Pagan Games are now very close to entering the final stage of it’s conversion of the Topware game Earth 2140. A demo will be released shortly and you may in fact already have it on your harddrive. Now you may wonder what is still missing, since Pagan Games and Epic Interactive are already releasing the demo of the game. Well, the game engine is already running, and it supports 68k Amigas as well as PPC equipped machines. It is possible to play it on an ‘040, but you most likely not be impressed by the speed. The reason for this is the limited bandwidth on the Amiga’s ageing graphics architecture and the large amount of graphics data that the 640*480/800*600 16 bit screenmodes demand. It does run quite nicely on a 68060 though which is the recommended minimum spec machine for the game. But with all the great PPC games coming out for the Amiga it is about time to upgrade anyway right?.. The final things that need to be done are rewriting the networking code for multiplayer mode, as the PC version is doing this via IPX, and finding a suitable format for playing the cutscene movies so that it will run properly on an 060 - and still look good - while not taking up more space than is available on the CD. This may, however, have to be dropped on the 68k version and be a ppc-only feature. Once these things are done, and the game has been thoroughly tested for possible remaining bugs, the game is ready for release. Meanwhile you could do a lot worse than downloading the demo and getting acquainted with the control system - you will then be ready to afflict maximum damage to other Earth 2140 players in network battle when the final game is released.
