Payback

Grand Theft Auto never made it for the Amiga - but who cares? We'll get Payback instead!

2000-07-11

Apex Designs is a new commercial games developer for the Amiga. Their first effort will be Payback which will be released around October/November. The game plays a lot like DMA Design's Grand Theft Auto (GTA) which has been a smash hit on the PC and PlayStation. DMA Design - responsible for Amiga games like Lemmings and Blood Money - started production of GTA on Amiga before they switched to PCs for a better market. So basically Payback is like GTA. You're in control of a criminal in a mnajor city. Your goal is to earn a certain amount of money on each level. And money can be earned in a lot of different ways. You can steal cars, deliver stolen goods and blow up stuff. You can even splash innocent people in any of the many different vehicles to drive. You can either work for yourself or one or more of the criminal organisations in the city. No matter what you do, you are bound to become a very unpopular man! It's very important to stay away from the police. Although it would be more in the style of the game to pick up your rocket launcher and blow up anything that looks like a police car. It is bound to pay better aswell... The game is seen in an overhead perspective. Unlike GTA the graphics are completely 3d. The cars, the people, everything. Payback offers linear texture mapping (perspective correct), reflection maps, bump maps and a lot of alpha blended special effects. It also offers advanced 3d sound compromising of 12 virtual channels completed of 500 different sound sources. Payback is based on a very fun game. And it even looks to beat GTA and GTA2 in several aspects. If that's not enough for you, it can even run on very decent machines. The game should play smoothly on even an 040/25. Overall Payback looks extremely promising and seems like the best orginal Amiga game for release this year. We can hardly wait. The development of Payback can be followed at the official site, but we will ofcourse bring you any news on this game ourselves.
