Car stealin' gun-slingin' gangsta action!

2000-12-05

For those of you who missed out on what Grand Theft Auto is - yes, the both of you - it is an action game that has you as a wannabe-gangster, trying to commit as many crimes as you can while avoiding the police. While it caused much commotion during the time of GTA's release with people debating whether or not players' moral values would be affected, I have yet to see exploding vehicles and citizen-beating gang members around my neighbourhood. I guess the social effects of the game were slightly overrated. The gameplay, however, was (and is) excellent and was praised in the press at the time, but even though rumor has it that the game was originally intended for the Amiga, we did not see an Amiga version. Apex Designs have decided to rectify this, not only by creating a GTA clone but by creating a GTA beater! Every aspect of GTA has been equalled or bettered in Payback. The graphics even look better than the Playstation version and there is a possibility to run the game in very high resolutions. On my machine (which is an Amiga 3000 with Cyberstorm 060 MK2 and Cybervision64) the game runs perfectly and very fast in 320*240, and is still perfectly playable in 640*480 if I turn off all special effects such as lens flares and artifacts. The game also features a motion blur option which looks very cool, but makes me feel rather queasy. I think it would be nice to be able to adjust the amount of motion blur because I think a bit less would make it look cool as well as be functional (i.e. simulate a moving camera). I look forward to testing the game on some of the other configurations I have available to see how well it runs on AGA and smaller processors. Well, what can I say about the game? It's GTA - only better. Still mission based, has gorgeous graphics and effects and is amazingly fast. Here at Amigafire we all look very much forward to getting our hands on the full game with the soundtrack etc. which will surely add a new dimension to the game. If you have any Playstation owning friends and want to show off with your trusty old Amiga, first show them Wipeout 2097 and then Payback - casually remarking that it's only running on the 68k processor - which will surely have their jaws cracking as they hit the floor.
